I saw a great art show by Wim Delvoye in Budapest last week. It was part of LOW Dutch-Flemish Kultfeszt, a great festival hosted in many interesting locations in the Hungarian capital. This show in particular was at the Ernst Muzeum, a great venue in Nagymező utza. I knew Delvoye from pictures of his work with the tattooed pigs, but I had never heard of his project "Cloaca" before.
The name of this project comes from the Latin word for sewer, and it is a machine that duplicates human digestion. The machine is fed and after a long process -- involving wires and tubes as well as acids, bacteria and enzyme liquids -- produces feces. Since he started working on the project in 2000, Delvoye developed several models of the Cloaca machine. The version on show at the Ernst was the "Cloaca New and Improved".
The
work fuses kinetic with a very intimate human activity, involving
various fields of expertise and plays with several layers of cultural
meaning while referring to the history of art (Piero Manzoni´s Merda d´Artista) and robotics (Jacques de Vaucanson´s Digesting Duck).
As with the pig tattoos, where you could buy the tattoo on the pig skin before the animal's natural death, Cloaca likewise suggests a very explicit political statement on the economical side of the art market and of the capitalistic system in general.
Delvoye is currently trying to set up a Cloaca business in the United States to avoid paying taxes on shit revenues in Belgium. He would get tax exemption in the US if his project is regarded as a church. Two lawyers are currently investigating what is the best way to establish such a church, while the artist is looking for a piece of land to build a temple.
One of Delvoye´s conclusions is that if shit itself guarantees that Cloaca is an art piece, it will never be a really successful enterprise.

I really like the way Delvoye defends his work from external critiques..
He is so far away from those artists who make provocative artworks for the taste of the scandal. He really truly loves what he does, and his attitude with the media is absolutely genius. He never sounds harmful, or offensive..rather you would say a little nerdy with his sarcasm and crudeness..Someone (from US) said that everything he says sounds 100% Belgian, but not sure what that means..
I was also reading about Twine and the semantic web a few days back as well. Should be an interesting ride.
Glad you're in the neighborhood, Bee.
